THE WORK
Jack Featherly makes paintings that begin in traditions of gestural abstraction but end somewhere completely new. The current body of work uses common visual references such as ASCII text and Doonesbury as a starting point from which to explore color, form and meaning.
Featherly transposes natural color palettes onto artificial constructs and vice versa. His use of ASCII text allows the representation of unique human figures to dissolve into archetypal forms, and further into abstraction. This simultaneous expression of pattern and image creates a shapeshifting world where the traditional figure/ground relationship collapses.
