THE WORK

Ryan Whittier Hale is a visual artist who manipulates photography and video through digital collage and 3D animation. Testing the boundaries that exist between the real and synthetic, Hale’s work often elicits the uncanny.

As virtual spaces play greater roles in mediating human interaction, so too do avatars, which function as surrogate selves. Hale’s work asks if, as a result, we are becoming too acclimated to a reduced intensity of human intimacy. How much are we really willing to invest emotionally in virtual engagements?

Videos Untitled (2012) and Monolith (2012-2014) are shown one after another on a loop throughout gallery hours. Total run time for both is 9 minutes and 6 seconds.

THE ARTIST

Ryan Whittier Hale (b. 1985 in San Francisco, CA) lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Hale holds a BFA in Design and Technology from Parsons, NY (2010). Notable recent exhibitions were held in New York at at NUTUREart, envoy enterprises, and Eyebeam (2014); Abrons Art Center (2013); New Museum, NY (2012) and a solo exhibition at NP Contemporary Art Center (2012). In addition to extensive showing in New York and California, Hale has exhibited internationally in China, Japan, France, Sweden and Switzerland.
