MICHELLE GRABNER

Michelle Grabner (b. 1962 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin) works in variety of mediums including drawing, painting, video and sculpture. Grabner’s multi-faceted career incorporates writing, curating and teaching with a studio practice grounded in process and productivity. As David Norr writes in the introduction to her exhibition at MoCA, Cleveland, “All of Grabner’s activities are driven by distinctive values and ideas: working outside of dominant systems, working tirelessly, working across platforms and towards community.”

Grabner holds an MA in Art History and a BFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and an MFA in Art Theory and Practice from Northwestern University. Major recent solo exhibitions occurred at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland (organized by David Norr) and the Indianapolis Museum of Art (curated by Tricia Paik). She participated in group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Tate St. Ives, UK; and Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland, among many others. Collections holding her work include the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; MoCA, Chicago; MUDAM, Luxemburg; Milwaukee Art Museum, Wisconsin; Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, Wisconsin; Daimler Contemporary, Berlin; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. She curated the Portland2016 Biennial of Contemporary Art, presented by Disjecta Contemporary Art Center in venues throughout Oregon, and currently divides her time between Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Cleveland, Ohio.
