JORDAN RATHUS

Jordan Rathus (b. 1983 in Princeton, New Jersey) creates playful videos, performances and installations that thoughtfully examine genre tropes and pop culture using humor and behind-the-scenes self-consciousness as critical tools. “I try to use culturally recognizable modes of visual storytelling in order to create a shortcut for the viewer,” Rathus explains. “From this point of comfort and familiarity I am able to more effectively communicate the deconstruction of these modes.”
Major exhibitions and performances have been held at venues such as The Jewish Museum, New York; The Knockdown Center, Queens; The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, Peekskill, NY; Art Institute of Malmo, Sweden and Upfor, Portland, OR. Rathus holds an MFA in Visual Arts (New Genres) from Columbia University and BFA in Film and Television Production from New York University. Her accolades include a Brooks Fellowship Award from Anderson Ranch in Colorado. In addition to her fine art practice, she works as an educator and filmmaker. She is the Director of the Horace Mann Summer Film Institute in the Bronx and recently directed the acclaimed music video for Amanda Palmer’s “Mother”.
