THE WORK
In these recent paintings, Takasaki uses the formal device of painted frames to enclose simple, graphic shapes. The exhibition comprises several series, each presenting a different narrative of the ephemerality of relationships and inevitability of loss. Takasaki has said that the works are meant “to reflect on how my generation is doing nothing, while waiting for something to happen." In these moments of stasis, he says, even the smallest details and movements are seen.
THE ARTIST
Shohei Takasaki (b. 1979, Saitama, Japan) lives and works in Portland, Oregon. Self-taught in painting, Takasaki works on canvas and paper in both abstraction and figuration. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held at Dar Al Funoon Gallery, Kuwait; Backwoods Gallery, Australia; and Tokyo galleries Calm & Punk, Space EDGE and PLSMIS. Takasaki has been featured in many publications, including Acclaim Magazine, Shift, Art a Part of Cult(ure), Hidden Champion, Antenna and Warp Magazine.
