THE WORK
Ben Buswell's sculptural work spans media from ceramics and plastics to incised photographs, subjecting these materials to physical processes such as repetitive mark-making, melting and tearing to highlight the temporal nature of the work. In No One Above or Below, Buswell continues to use photographs as a sculptural medium. The photographs are often of water surfaces, showing ripples and highlights without reference to scale or horizon. Buswell's process-based approach investigates the inseparability of the material from what is done to it, a parallel for the relationship between body and mind. "I have a firm belief that we exist only through our bodies, that we are wholly physical things. So material and sculptural presence, as surrogates for this idea, are embedded in the way I think," Buswell says.
This exhibition includes new work as well as a reconfiguration of a sculptural installation presented during his recent solo show at The Art Gym at Marylhurst University, I Do Not Belong to the Sky (February 17 – March 27, 2015). Buswell's Art Gym installation made possible in part due to the support of The Oregon Arts Commission, Ford Family Foundation and The Regional Arts and Culture Council.
